Your fingernails should be short and clean

Pariksit Dasa: In 1972, we had established ISKCON Press at Tiffany Place, near the Brooklyn temple. It was a little dangerous there, a couple of devotees had gotten beaten up so we also established night guards. Once, when I was stuck on night guard duty over at Tiffany Place, Prabhupada had just arrived and everybody else was in the temple with him. It wasn't until seven or eight o'clock in the morning, when it was time for me to receive my gayatri mantra initiation, that I came to the temple. I went into Prabhupada's room. Prabhupada was about to give me my gayatri mantra when he looked at my hands and said, "Your fingernails should be short and clean, like mine." I had been neglecting my fingernails for a while. They were long and because I was involved in construction, they weren't clean. Ever since Prabhupada said that, however, I've kept my fingernails short and clean.
